A total lunar eclipse created a chance for Californians to get a glimpse of the blood moon to the delight of onlookers up and down the state.
The eclipse took place between midnight and the dawn’s early light on Tuesday, resulting in the spooky red moon being visible in both Northern and Southern California.
At around 2:52 in a video posted from the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, the moon turned a copper-rusty red color as it passes directly into the dark shadow cast by Earth.
The unique red glow is a result of sunlight being filtered and bent through the Earth’s atmosphere (much like a sunset), the observatory stated.
The reason for the change in color is because our planet blocks most of the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon, and the light that does reach the lunar surface is filtered through a thick slice of Earth’s atmosphere, NASA said.
“It’s as if all of the world’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the Moon.”
Some of the wildest videos from the celestial event were captured in this video from The Post.
And people were loving it.
“Wow!! Thank you for sharing this with us!!” one person commented
Another added, “How symbolic…Biblical and spiritual importance.”
While a third shared, “Just to think some primitive humans would look at the sky and say this must be the end times. Nope, just normal lunar behavior.”
Depending on where a person was in the state, the moon’s color varied. Pictures coming out of Yuba City in Northern California showed images of the moon with a light red glow, as KCRA noted.
While photos from the station’s viewers in Rancho Cordova, outside of Sacramento, showed the moon as a giant red ball in the sky.
ABC 30 News in Fresno shared a snap the station said was taken outside its studio in the early morning hours of Tuesday. The moon had a mix of golden and red highlights during the total event. Comments under the post ranged from the view being “beautiful” to “stunning,” with everyone sharing snaps from their phone of the moment.
The blood moon was even visible from the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, where some incredible photos of the moment were captured and can be seen below.
The unique eclipse was also exciting for those who believe that the opportunity provided a chance to charge healing waters, tarot cards and crystals for the coming year.
If you missed the blood moon on Tuesday, you are going to have a bit of a wait. It will not happen again until December 31, 2028, per NASA.
