College Basketball Referee Gets Knocked Out in Brawl

In the second round of the Sun Belt Championship, the South Alabama Jaguars and Coastal Carolina Chanticleers faced off on Wednesday.

While the game ended in an 80-70 win for the Jaguars, the biggest storyline coming out of the game was a brawl that saw eight players ejected and a referee knocked out. The incident centered around Alabama’s Cordasia Harris and Coastal Carolina’s Tracey Hueston, who started the skirmish under the hoop.

As punches began flying and more players became involved, one of the referees attempting to break up the fight appeared to accidentally catch a right hook from Hueston to the head/neck area.

The referee remained on the ground as a staffer and fellow official blocked her from the melee, but there have been no further updates on her condition at this time.

Aside from Harris and Hueston, six other players were ejected in Daniela Gonzalez, Amyah Sutton, Terren Coffil, Saneea Bevley, Princess Okafor Nweze and Jeriyah Baines, as they all left the bench to get involved.

At this time, the Sun Belt has released no statements, and it is unclear whether the ejected players will be suspended for South Alabama’s game on Thursday against Texas State in the third round.

Losing Harris would be a huge blow for the Jaguars, as she leads the team in rebounds per game at 9 and blocks at 1.7. There is also a chance that losing Sutton and Gonzalez could mean the team’s top three scorers are out with their season on the line.
