While much of F1 paddock had gathered for the high-profile premiere of the F1 film last year, one notable absence stood out: Max Verstappen.
The four-time world champion made it clear he had little interest in attending the event, explaining that his focus remains firmly on performance rather than publicity.
“That’s Not Me”
Speaking in a candid exchange caught on camera, that has gone viral, Verstappen was asked why he was not present at the gala premiere.
His response was direct.
“We are actually doing performance,” he said, suggesting that while others attended the event, his priority was work. He added that he is not the type of person who wants to walk a red carpet or spend time at celebrity-driven gatherings.
“I don’t want to hang around with famous people that get invited. I don’t need to be in front of the camera all the time. This is really not me.”
The Dutch driver’s comments underline a personality trait that has defined much of his career: a preference for competition over spectacle.

A Growing Entertainment Era in F1
F1 has increasingly embraced entertainment beyond the track. From Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” to large-scale promotional events surrounding the new F1 movie, the sport has leaned heavily into global exposure.
For some drivers, these events are part of the modern F1 landscape, opportunities to grow the sport’s fanbase and commercial appeal.
For Verstappen, however, the priority appears unchanged: preparation, performance and results.
The timing of the premiere, held during a competitive stretch of the season, may also have played a role. Teams often balance media commitments with simulator work, factory development, and physical preparation.
Performance First
Verstappen’s remarks also reflect his broader philosophy. Throughout his career with Red Bull Racing, he has consistently emphasized winning over visibility.
Even during championship-winning seasons, he has often downplayed off-track narratives, instead focusing on car development, race execution and technical feedback.
In a sport where brand-building and celebrity crossover increasingly matter, Verstappen’s stance sets him apart.
