The Indianapolis Colts must consider another option at quarterback following several noteworthy things that happened at the NFL Scouting Combine last week at the position.

The Colts appear to have given up on Anthony Richardson, shopping the 2023 first-round pick this offseason. Indianapolis wanted to re-sign veteran quarterback Daniel Jones, but the two sides aren’t close to a new deal.
Per Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports, Jones is seeking more money than general manager Chris Ballard expected to pay.

“I’m told the representatives for Daniel Jones and the Colts are not close to coming to terms on a new contract,” Pauline wrote.
“Evidently, Jones wants more money than the Colts expected. This means the franchise may have to go to a contingency plan and put either the transition or franchise tag on Jones, then try to sign Pierce to an extension before free agency opens.”
With Jones’ contract discussions becoming a problem for Indianapolis, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins could be a solution this offseason.
“Maybe that’s the Vikings. Maybe it’s the Colts if something happens with Daniel Jones,” Breer wrote. “Maybe it’s nobody for a while, and Cousins waits the market out, or even for a potential training camp injury over the summer.”
Breer noted that Cousins, 37, wants to be the starting quarterback for whatever team he signs with this offseason.
“Along those lines, it sounds like Cousins will be looking for a commitment from a team,” Breer wrote. “Not the kind he’d get earlier in his career. He knows that’s not coming. However, what he’d like now is something that shows that the team signing him sees him as the team’s starter.”
Cousins is a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback. The 2012 fourth-round pick by Washington has thrown for 44,700 yards, 298 touchdowns and 131 interceptions in his career.
Cousins expected to be the starter when he signed with the Atlanta Falcons, but the front office immediately picked his replacement with Michael Penix Jr. in 2024.
The Colts are expected to make a run at the playoffs in 2026. Cousins might like a chance to chase a ring at the twilight of his career.
